Nanoscale Membrane Structures for Radiation Detection
Radiation detectors are used in a wide range of environments from medical to nuclear and research facilities. The use of nanoscale membranes for radiation detection has largely been unexplored, despite having interesting optoelectronic properties. This project focuses on conducting a fundamental study on investigating the responses of ultrathin nanoscale membrane structures upon extreme external stimuli such as high-energy radiating particles. Modeling and experimental studies will be performed to gain clear understandings of how ultrathin nanostructures respond to radiation particles. The mesoscopic processes by which optical, electronic, thermal and mechanical properties would change in extreme environments will also be explored.
